Chimney breast TV mounting

TV mounting above a fireplace

The most common job we do and the one people worry about most. Here's how it works, what it costs and when we'd talk you out of it.

Prices

What it costs

Mounting by size (€99 to €289) + €29 above a fireplace + bracket. Tilt bracket €55 recommended. Most chimney-breast jobs come to €263 for a 55 or 65 inch TV with The Clean Finish.

  • Heat checked with the fire on before we drill
  • Tilt bracket so the picture angles down to the sofa
  • Neat painted conduit, or a quote for chasing
  • Old bracket and packaging taken away
A 65 inch TV mounted on the chimney breast above a stove on a tilt bracket, cables hidden

A chimney breast is solid brick or block behind the plaster, so it takes any bracket and any TV. The two things to get right are heat and height. We check the surface above the fire with the fire on; if it gets hot enough to matter, we mount higher and use a tilt bracket so you still see the picture from the sofa.

Height matters more over a fireplace than anywhere else, because the mantel pushes the TV up. We mark the position on your photo before we come, so you can argue with it on the phone rather than on the day.

Cables: on a chimney breast the socket is usually to one side, so painted conduit along the top of the mantel or down the edge is the tidy answer (€39). Hiding cables inside a chimney breast means chasing, which we quote separately.

Questions

Questions about chimney breast TV mounting.

Will the heat damage the TV?

If the surface above the fire stays under hand-warm with the fire on for an hour, it's fine. If not, we mount higher, use a tilt bracket, or tell you honestly it's not a good spot.

Can you hide the cables in the chimney breast?

It's solid, so hiding means chasing a channel and replastering. We quote that from a photo. Most people go with painted conduit.

What bracket do I need over a fireplace?

Tilt, nearly always. It brings the picture down towards you. €55 fitted.
